Just wondering, I truly don’t think humans should be “running” on prescription pills at all, but I am going to try this because its better than smoking to my grave….. sooo anyone know what pills like this do to a body?
———-
Wellebutrin will not be why you quit smoking. It is to ease the anxiety you will have from withdrawl. It works for some people and some people it doesn’t. Just keep trying.
There is a new med called Chantix which will help one quit. It blocks the receptors where the nicotine goes into so you don’t have the cravings. Quitting is difficult and medicine alone isn’t going to work. One has to really work on quiting.
Nicotine is a physical and psychological addiction. I am a smoker. I have tried many times to quit without meds, no luck.
I think if I remember correctly wellebutrin may cause a person to stop having dreams, or atleast stop rembering them. I think another side affect is possible sexual dysfunction, but I would talk to a doctor about that, because it may just be a slight chance of that side affect.
Chantix is working for my step mom. She still wants to smoke but that stems from the behavior part. She says she doesn’t have physical cravings. I think it is worse for her when I come over because she can smell better now, and can smell the smoke on me. I am her trigger as far as her wanting to smoke.

Anyone have any experience with taking Chantix (Varenicline) or Zyban (bupropion) to quit smoking?
From what I’ve read it seems Zyban works better and Chantix is a fairly new drug for it. Varenicline is a partial antagonist of the niACH receptor and Bupropion is an antidepressant that acts as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, and nicotinic antagonist. Sounds similar in that they dumb/prevent the pleasure of smoking. Seems to me thought that the Bupr. sounds like it would work better since Varen. is only a partial nicotinic antagonist plus Bupr. being an antidepressent helps with the depressive moods associated with quitting.
So the Question: Anyone had experience with both or either or knew someone that has stories about it? Whats prescribed commonly? What side effects and or pros and cons for each did you experience?
Isnt a full nicotinic antagonist better than a partial? And why did they leave out the dopamine reuptake inhibitor?
I’ll try web-md on this too. Thanks

Yes! Chantix was approved by FDA May 11, 2006.
FDA writes:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today the approval of Chantix (varenicline tartrate) tablets, to help cigarette smokers stop smoking. The active ingredient in Chantix, varenicline tartrate, is a new molecular entity that received a priority FDA review because of its significant potential benefit to public health.
Chantix acts at sites in the brain affected by nicotine and may help those who wish to give up smoking in two ways: by providing some nicotine effects to ease the withdrawal symptoms and by blocking the effects of nicotine from cigarettes if they resume smoking.
“Tobacco use, particularly cigarette smoking, is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States and is responsible for a growing list of cancers as well as chronic diseases including those of the lung and heart,” said Scott Gottlieb, MD, Deputy Commissioner for Medical and Scientific Affairs. “The agency is committed to helping facilitate the development of products to help people quit smoking and improve their overall quality of life.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 44.5 million adults in the United States smoke cigarettes and more than 8.6 million of them have at least one serious illness caused by smoking.
“Cigarette smoking is a very difficult habit to break due in large part to nicotine dependence or addiction” said Dr. Steven Galson, Director of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Chantix therapy has proven to be effective in smokers motivated to quit and will provide another tool for physicians to use for the millions of smokers who want to quit.”
The effectiveness of Chantix in smoking cessation was demonstrated in six clinical trials, which included a total of 3659 chronic cigarette smokers who were treated with varenicline. Five of the six studies were randomized, controlled clinical trials in which Chantix was shown to be superior to placebo in helping people quit smoking. These smokers had previously averaged 21 cigarettes a day for approximately 25 years. In two of the five placebo-controlled studies, Chantix-treated patients were also more successful in giving up smoking than patients treated with Zyban (bupropion).
The approved course of Chantix treatment is 12 weeks. Patients who successfully quit smoking during Chantix treatment may continue with an additional 12 weeks of Chantix treatment to further increase the likelihood of long-term smoking cessation.
In clinical trials, the most common adverse effects of Chantix were nausea, headache, vomiting, flatulence (gas), insomnia, abnormal dreams, and dysgeusia (change in taste perception).
Chantix is manufactured and distributed by Pfizer, Inc., New York, NY.

Standing with your glass of champagne in your hand, counting down the seconds to twelve and the new year, you make a rapid status of your life. And this is when your New Year resolution takes shape. You decide you want to lose weight, see your family more often and quit smoking. But are your going to keep your New Year resolution? Hardly, for a decision to change a habit or behavior is not just something you just implements from one day to another – your decision must be given time to mature.
The key to success lies in careful planning and putting in some very specific goals that are attainable. Here are some quit smoking tips, that will guide you through the new year resolution of quitting smoking and how to keep it.
New Year resolution: I will stop smoking
You must really want to stop smoking. So think about the benefits of smoking and the benefits of giving up. Weigh your arguments against each other. If you decide to quit smoking, think of how it should be implemented.
Before you actually quit smoking, think about how and when you smoke now – your smoking habits. When you have a clear picture of your smoking habits, consider what your can do instead when you no longer smoke. Think of the alternatives – instead of a smoke break at work, you can eat a piece of fruit or go for a walk. Instead of smoking right after dinner, start chewing on your favorite chewing gum – this could be a nicotine chewing gum, if that is your preferred quit smoking method.
After you have quit smoking, your metabolism slow slightly down and you risk facing the much feared quit smoking weight gain. This can be avoided entirely by exercise, which also works well against the physical symptoms of smoking cessation, anxiety and restlessness, and when you are irritable.
Get support from others in the same situation by getting them to stop smoking at the same time, or by signing up for a smoking cessation course.
Should you take a cold turkey or gradual tapering off of nicotine products such as nicotine patch or nicotine gum? Or a quit smoking pill? If you have smoked for many years and / or have smoked several cigarettes each day, it may be helpful to use nicotine chewing gum in a transitional phase to take the top of the physical symptoms, so you can concentrate on breaking the habits that are not is so easy to change. But remember that nicotine chewing gum should not become a new addiction.
8 ways to keeping you New Years resolution:
- You must really want it. Feel it in your heart, and not only in your head, or you might drop it again.
- Set realistic and attainable goals. Your goal should be as specific as possible. Say for example, that you will quit smoking before March 1st, instead of just saying that you will quit smoking.
- Focus on what you want to achieve instead of what you want to avoid.
- Visualize the goal – imagine, for example, a more healthy version of yourself.
- Plan carefully. You need to know what you would do in various tempting situations.
- Get support from your environment.
- Do not have a bad conscience, if you occasionally fall in. Blame will get you nowhere.
- Evaluate your progress and praise yourself for the goal when you accomplish it.

It is a common thing for people to prefer taking a quit smoking pill to trying a “Cold Turkey” treatment, the latter being based entirely on self control and very few succeed in it. Drinking a glass of water with a stop smoking pill is easy and appropriate for any active person.
Some of the top stop smoking pills are Zyban and Wellbutrin, they are the classical treatments that most doctors recommend. These stop smoking pills when combined with counseling sessions can give very good results to most patients.
Zyban is a favorite smoking cessation pill known to be a first choice as it favors the blood cleaning by increasing circulation and stimulating several glands. This stop smoking pill will make a person feel like he or she has just smoked a cigarette.
Most doctors say that these stop smoking pills fight against the physical problem by eliminating nicotine from the body, but they don’t work on the psychological craving.
Any stop smoking pill must be taken at least for a week and the doctor’s advice is crucial in this time interval to avoid any unpleasant side effects. The prescribed dose of the quit smoking pill usually varies from patient to patient. Several factors are to be taken into consideration, for how many years the person has been smoking, and how much he/she smokes a day, age and other health problems must be noted.
Problems like dry mouth and insomnia are common side effects inflicted by any stop smoking pill but these unpleasant symptoms won’t put your health in danger at all. Zyban is a powerful stop smoking pill and after repeated administration it will take about one week or more to disappear from the blood. People who suffer from stomach problems or any pulmonary diseases like bronchitis must avoid this stop smoking pill.
Stop smoking pills mustn’t be administrated to people who are under antidepressant treatments as serious complications can appear. The most important fact when turning to stop smoking pills is that you must consult your doctor before administration. Newer and more complex stop smoking pills have appeared on the market that suppress the nicotine receptors from the persons brain so that if one smokes no satisfaction comes with it.

Hypnosis as smoking cessation, the easy method for smoking cessation!
It is very easy to start smoking, but it is up hill to stop again!
Just ask a smoker, or just someone who smokes a few cigarettes a day. Normally you can quit smoking quite easily by using will power for a few days’ time, but then the urge towards nicotine gets so strong, that your mind makes all sorts of excuses to start smoking again. And if you just smoke on cigarette - you’re back where you started.

What works is … Hypnosis!
Many methods on how to quit smoking cigarettes have been pointed out: Patches, gum and quit smoking pills just to name a few. But what really works, is smoking cessation with hypnosis. Hypnosis as a smoking cessation method, have many times been mentioned as a method that does not work in the long run, and elsewhere, it is stressed out as the only way to go.
So, who should you believe? I will not try to get you as a customer (since I do not do hypnosis), but promise you that stop smoking with hypnosis is at least as effective as any other method I know of. And I have even tried the most …
How does it work?
It is in principle not important how long you have smoked, whether you are a social smoker, or just plain heavy smoker.
Hypnosis can help you with your smoking cessation. Anyone who has tried to stop smoking, using a quit smoking pill or other quit smoking medication, are aware of the intense itch that comes after a few days, the mood swings and also more physical symptoms of weaning that builds up.
When using hypnosis to stop smoking, you will be guided by a hypnotist, which brings you into a dream-like trance state. In this state are you more receptive to suggestions, and while being deeply relaxed, you can easily keep track of everything which takes place under the hypnosis / smoking cessation.

Expectation = Result
The hypnotist will use positive suggestions, which will help you to escape the urge to smoke and get rid of the intense desire for a cigarette, that normally comes after a short time. Many believe that the reduced desire to smoke only works during the hypnosis, and that they not later will be influenced by the positive suggestions, and if that is what you expect, it is most likely to become the result.
Your mind roughly works in that way, that what you expect will be what you get. Despite all the resistance, hypnosis for smoking cessation is now one of, if not the, most popular method of smoking cessation.
What you have to remember when choosing your method of smoking cessation, is that no method works if you do not have the will and desire to stop smoking, and is willing to make an effort yourself.
Combining quit smoking hypnosis with quit smoking medication like quit smoking pills, nicotine patches or other quit smoking drugs, will often prove to give the best results.

Zyban and Chantix are two different pills that can be used as an aid to smoking cessation. The pills must be prescribed by a doctor after detailed evaluation. They both increase the chance to become smoke-free, but they are not miracle cures.
Along with the growing interest in smoking cessation, several pharmaceutical companies launched quit smoking pills to stop smoking. In 2001, Zyban, which contains bupropion, and in 2006 came Chantix, which contains varenicline. Several new drugs are on the way.
Zyban
Zyban is a pill that works by reducing the urge to smoke and reducing withdrawal symptoms by a cessation. The pill contains no nicotine, but instead the substance bupropion. It affects the nervous lanes in the brain, which usually triggers symptoms of a cessation. Bupropion was originally developed and approved for the treatment of depression, but it turned out that some of the subjects quit smoking. Subsequently, Zyban been tested and approved for smoking cessation.
Chantrix
Chantix is a quit smoking pill like Zyban, which works by reducing the urge to smoke and reducing withdrawal symptoms by a cessation. The active substance in the pill is varenicline. The substance works by blocking the places in the brain which is affected by nicotine. This will minimize withdrawal symptoms. Varenicline is the first quit smoking pill, which is designed specifically for smoking cessation
Effectiveness
Smoking cessation pills are much newer than nicotine replacement, and is therefore not so many studies of effectiveness. In the studies that have been made, all smokers – in addition to the pills – also received advice on their cessation. Approximately one in four smokers are smoke-free after one year. Some studies suggest that quit smoking pills, and particularly Chantix, is slightly more effective than nicotine replacement, but others conclude that there are no major differences.
Recommendations
Cancer Society recommends that smokers who wants to quit smoking takes part in a smoking cessation course or gets individual advice of a smoking cessation by a counselor. Advice should include knowledge about medicines for smoking cessation, how they function and side effects in the short and long term. Recent research shows, that the risk of HPV transmission increases significantly in smokers, which increases the risk of developing cancer.
Since nicotine replacement is the most proven drug for smoking cessation, you should try it first. Quit smoking pills are good alternatives, but they both require a prescription. Physicians should consider whether there may be circumstances that talks against the use of medication.
Before using the quit smoking pills, visit one of the many quit smoking forums and ask for other peoples experiences with the different quit smoking aids.

After just two years on the market, the quit smoking pill – smoking cessation -product Chantix has beaten the record in the most serious side effects, says the report, but Pfizer rejects proven causal connection.
Many people are using the quit smoking pill Chantix, when they get medical help to stop smoking.
Now a U.S. investigation, shows that there are indeed a great many side effects associated with using Chantix according to Swedish Läkemedel world. The article is based on a report of May 2008 from the American non-profit organization Institute for Safe Medication Practice.
Quit Smoking Medication
According to researchers, there is never actually registered so many side effects of a drug after such a short time on the market.
Of the 3,000 reports of serious side effects that researchers have reviewed, are reports of patients who lost consciousness while driving, while others experienced sudden muscle spasms.
Besides the side effects of accident reports, there are mountains of reports of vision loss, changes in heart rhythms, seizures, severe skin reactions and diabetes.
1000 side effects reactions in the quarter
Each quarter researchers examines the side effect register to see what medicines have more side effects.
Most drugs are about five serious side effect events per quarter. Chantix was last year record, by having more than 1,000 reports in a single quarter.
One of the authors behind the American study, Curt Furberg, estimates that from 40,000 people in the U.S. alone are affected by the severe adverse reactions to the product.
Pilots are prohibited to use Chantix
Earlier the pilots in the U.S. Air Force has recommended the use of Chantix, when they were with the bad smoking habit. But after this study publication, prohibits the Air Force now its pilots and traffic controllers to-use pill.
Medicines Agency in the United States, the FDA says that the report is a signal that there must now be carried out new studies on the product.
The Producer defends its product
According to the researchers behind the study for Pfizer knows the many serious side effects, because many of the reports in the study come from them.
Pfizer comments in a message on its website surveys. It states:
“The authors acknowledge, however, that not in the light of these adverse reaction reports can see that there is a causal link between the use of Chantix and the reported adverse events – because most of those involved patients used other drugs while the use of Chantix. ”
No drugs without side effects
Pharmaceutical company also lays down that it is impossible to make drugs without side effects.
“But the goal is obviously to create products with so few and mild side effects as possible. This also applies to Pfizer’s smoking cessation agent Chantix. And most users of Chantix experienced no significant side effects. But anyone experiencing side effects. It may be in the form of migraine headaches, sleeping difficulties and nausea or fatigue and dizziness. There may also be uncommon in the form of, for example, in vision, neck pain, muscle tension, tremor and difficulty speaking. ”
In the United States alone is expected that 3.5 million people have used the quit smoking pill since its launch in 2006.

Not all nicotine rehabilitation means is nasal spray, inhalers and patches and gum. In fact, there are also quit smoking pills or smoking cessation pills as a means against relapse on stopping smoking, and this must be attempted basalt to explain a little about them.
The first thing we look at is a tablet that you can put in the mouth, and here is delivers the gradual nicotine, which then is absorbed by the mucous membranes in the mouth. The nicotine is not delivered and taken in as fast as if you smoke a cigarette, but it helps to gradually lower your consumption and hence dependence level, just as many of the other nicotine aids.
Usually when you smoke a cigarette, it takes only a very few seconds for the nicotine to be transported from the lung tissue and into the bloodstream, and up to the brain – “the reward”, in the form of nicotine, you receive very quickly in this case. But with the nicotine tablet, the nicotine must first pass through the bloodstream from the mucous membranes of the mouth, and up to the brain, and it is a much slower process. It is comparable to taking the stairs instead of the elevator, you can not carry as much (nicotine) and it is more slowly to go up.
Number two on the list is anti depressive pills. There are many cases where smokers have had good experience using the pills, which, in most cases stimulates the mood in a positive manner, and formes a counterweight to stop smoking, because sopping to smoke at times can be accompanied with some reluctance and depression.
However, this is not something you just can buy in the supermarket, it must be prescribed by your doctor – but if you have tried other means and believe that they are not as effective, it may be an idea to have a consultation with your doctor and discuss whetheranti depressive pills might be the solution.
The last item on the list is a fairly new quit smoking pill on the market, by the name of Champix. This should encourage the production of dopamine in the brain (which is the brain’s reward substance). If you do something good for yourself, dopamine is released (go for a run, etc).
Unfortunately smoking is eventually rewarded with dopamine, and this is certainly not the intention. So, in addition to stimulate the dopamine production, the product also fights nicotine so it is not quite the same pleasure as before.
Champix, however, is a relatively new product, and in fact only on prescription, so here you must take a talk with your doctor. He or she can also help to reveal what tools are generally best for you.
Generally it is very good with tools, but remember that it is not enough to take a smoking cessation pill and then “it is probably over.” It is not the headache you must fight, but a change of lifestyle you actually need.
All means can be used, for instance a quit smoking pill, but the real battle be fought in your mental home, and careful preparation it is the alpha and omega. Remember also to finally use your social networks, and use experience from someone who havesuccessfully quit smoking.
