How Did You Quit Smoking When You Found Out You Were Pregnant?

When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, I quit that day – no problem.
Now that I’m pregnant again – I’m having a harder time. Any suggestions?
I know it’s simple to say – just quit, reckon of the baby. I know, I know. Just asking for suggestions on how to make it simpler.
Thanks in advance. And no thanks to the criticism in advance.

I had no problem with my 2nd, my 3rd was more hard and with my 4th I was worried I wouldn’t be able to quit.
I had to start by dropping a cigarette every few days. That worked out pretty simple, bu the last 2-3 cigarettes were a real struggle, plus my husband smokes and that didn’t make it any simpler. It took me about a month longer to get rid of the last few cigarettes a day.
Excellent luck. It’s so hard no matter how you do it.

I wanted to get pregnant and my DH said he would not have a baby with me if I smoked, so I quit. How I did it is… I set a date to quit… for me it was January 4th, 2009. At midnight on the 4th, I smoked my last cig. That next morning when i woke up I grabbed my pack of smokes and place one in my mouth but didn’t light it. I did what I would normally do with that unlit cig in my mouth. When ever I got a desire to smoke I smoked a unlit cig. I know it sounds crazy but it worked. The thought that i had them there just in case I needed them was all I needed. Plus the cig in my mouth even though it was not lit made it much simpler. HIDE YOUR LIGHTER, LOL!

I don’t have information on quitting because it was really very simple for me…
But once you do kick it (and you will, because you want to and that’s an vital step) do your best not to start again. My dad quit for 8 years once and then ongoing again… every time you quit it’s harder and harder.
Just believe in your ability to do it. Everyone is different but I truly believe in the strength of will power.
    Best of luck to you!!

Is it more of the nicotine that you are craving or the motion. I know for me it is more the habit and putting something to my lips. This sounds stupid but give it a try, if it is an oral addiction and not the nicotine than you can try carrot sticks, the motion may help, worse case scenario get some herbs that are non-toxic to physically or baby and roll them (like a cigarette) and smoke that.

I took me several weeks. I did the ancient fashion cut down. My doctor advised this too. Well, I was smoking a pack a day, and as soon as I found out I was pregnant I cut that in half. Then I just kept doing that until I was down to 1 cigarette a day (literally). Then I stopped, obviously! I still feel guilty for not quitting cold failure though. And I still want to smoke, all the time…but I don’t, of course. It is the toughest thing ever. Excellent luck!

  6. I quit smoking the day I took my pregnancy test.
It was rough but I’ve not touched a cancer stick since.
Have you tried gum? Suckers or hard candies? I was able to get my mind off of wanting a smoke by just popping a candy in my mouth or chewing gum. The most helpful was Dum-Dums. I had the obsession with the fingers to mouth part of smoking, so having to really place the candy in and take it out helped me a ton.

i don’t smoke, but i know a lady who used this nicotine gum, it has all the nicotine your body craves, but there is no tar or any other chemicals. you just take smaller and smaller peices every day until you get off. and it would be a excellent thought to not start smoking again after this :)

  8. I found out i was pregnant and I just said my baby is more vital than the cigarettes. i still had that craving but i just chewed gum, ate ice lol.. and peppermints.

It was real hard for me too. I just drank alot of water and ate alot of hard candy & gum. It took me a few weeks unfortunately, but eventually I just didn’t want them anymore.

Aww, too terrible that you ongoing back up after quitting with your daughter. That said, I would question your DR if there are any ok treatments to help you that won’t harm the baby.
