Here is an overview of the quit day by day – your quit smoking timeline.
Be sure to bookmark this page and come back for support during the hard time.
But first of all, I must remind you of a few things you should do in the days leading up to your smoking cessation. A really good idea is to bring together a lot of the last days of cigarette butts, in a glass jar or similar, and fill it just over halfway up with water. So whenever you are in an emergency and close to fall in and start smoking again, you can take a little sniffer, the smell in itself should give you a little extra time to regain the decision to stop … It is very disgusting, I can promise you.
Of course the quit smoking symptoms described below depends on whether or not you use quit smoking drugs, like quit smoking pills, quit smoking acupuncture or similar stop smoking aids. But the stop smoking benefits – they are guaranteed.
Quit Smoking Timeline – Day 1
You’re on the your way, you maybe feel a little strange, but it is quite normal, remember that it is a new feeling for you not to smoke all the time. Quite a few feels, as if they are about to be sick. You might also find it hard to concentrate, but remember that it is quite normal, and enjoy that your blood pressure, your blood circulation and your skin temperature is already normalized, and the risk of heart attack is much less than before. Share your experience in the forum here.
Quit Smoking Timeline – Day 2
Most are experiencing day 2 as being very restless, thinking often of smoking, and you are probably also a bit annoying to be near. This is quite normal and is just your body’s signals to you, that it is starting to getting weaned from nicotine. Your blood is now flowing virtually unimpeded through the body again, and this can affect you in many ways, but you just have to push it to side – this should not be so difficult at this time. Share your experience in the forum here.
Quit Smoking Timeline – Day 3
Today you will again begin to taste the things you put into the mouth, and your sense of smell starts improving… Physically however, this is the day where it begins to become difficult, as your mind and your ego will try to fool you into thinking that this is the wrong decision you have taken, and your body will “scream for nicotine” …
Try instead to take a walk or a run, you already are in a better condition, and it would be good for you to get the pulse a bit raised. Day 3 in your smoking cessation is the first really hard one – this is where you need to hang in! Share your thoughts in the forum here.
Quit Smoking Timeline – Day 4
Now your body really starts reacting to the lack of nicotine, and many have constipation, or the opposite, it will be hard to find peace… Your throat and lungs starts to become cleaner, and will probably cause you to cough slightly in the next day. However, this is a healthy sign, remember that your throat have been really greasy in and sticky for a long time, and you are not accustomed to a full functioning throat. Just hold out, in a few days is the worst is over. Your body is becoming detoxed, and you are well on track to become a non-smoker for the rest of your life.
Quit Smoking Timeline – Day 5
From this day there will be longer between the feeling that you just need a cigarette, and it becomes increasingly easier for you to stick with your decision … You can also enjoy than you are now breathing a lot easier, and now your senses, smell and taste senses are almost perfect and on the level of a non smokers senses.
Quit Smoking Timeline – Day 6 and 7
Less symptoms every day and your smoking cessation is becoming much easier, 7 days is actually a full week, and now the worst is over. Now you can release the emotional energy which has been used for worrying over your cessation. Consider taking up some kind of sports, start taking walks and get some fresh air.
Quit Smoking Timeline – Day 8 – 10
Now you are at a stage where smokers around you are starting to smell awful, all while you begin to smell better … Your breath will be fresh, and your voice will now also be clean and clear in tone. Now you’re almost home free …
Quit Smoking Timeline – Day 11 – 12
Now you should start getting brighter and more beautiful teeth, unless you consume large amounts of cola, coffee or wine. Your skin now has a brighter tone, and is significantly nicer to touch. At the same time the morning coughing leaves you completely, your throat is almost normal, and only very sensitive people still feels some morning cough or similar.
Quit Smoking Timeline – Day 13 and 14
Now you can actually say that you are free of smoking, since you haven’t smoked for 2 weeks, and you should no longer have any physical reasons to start again. You will generally have more energy, simply because your body is not burdened daily of having to extract the extra poison out of your blood, your immune system is in much better shape, and you will now easily avoid colds and the like. Cigarettes will now take up less and less in your universe, and as long as you understand that just one small cigarette, yes just one or two wheezes involves an imminent risk of finding yourself back in the smokers role again, you are good.
Quit Smoking Timeline – Weeks and months after …
Now it will be reasonably easy to be a non smoker, although the withdrawal symptoms may not entirely disappear until after 3 to 6 months. As a non smoker, you may be tempted to smoke just a little – to a party or on a holiday, but statistics show, that only 1 in one thousand former smokers can keep it up as a “party smoker” without falling back into dependency.
Do not let yourself fall into the trap, stay off smoking the rest of your life, and enjoy a healthier and richer life!
Good luck with your smoking cessation!

where is everybody? Day 15 for me! feeling awesome! i had one on Halloween though, but thats it. Good luck Nandi, be strong.
oh there u are!
good for u colin and lorna!
I am 54 and have smoked most of my life since age 18 other than when I was pregnant. I smoked my last cigarette last Sunday and it has been pretty bad at times, but all in all the benefits far outweigh the negatives of ever lighting up again! I know I can do this, just one day at a time! I NEVER want to smoke another cigarette again as long as I live!!! I am sitting here listening to the oxygen machine that my husband has to use at night becuase he has COPD from smoking and I don’t ever want to go there!
Day 5 for me crawling out of my skin but I’ve got to make it. Taking deep breaths.
Nandy congratulations on making the decision. LR same for you.
It is the hardest thing I had to do in my life, but I know it is possible.
You quit smoking one craving at a time…. that is the easiest and the only way I could do it. The whole thing is to do something to distract you from that one single craving.
Reading tips from other people is good, getting motivated is also good, but I think each one of you has to find its own path to success share it with others to support them.
If I could do it, anyone can. I loved smoking, would still smoke if it was not my kids. What example am I setting for them if I smoke?
I am 3 weeks clean now. I know the path. Will never smoke that single cigarette again in my life.
Hello all,
Day 4 of clean smells and fresh air, I have smoked for 20 years, so far I am amazed at how smooth and soft my skin already feels, I am noticing a huge difference in my face as well, I love the fact that I biked 30 miles on Saturday and was able to still carry a conversation without gasping for air, and I ran 3 miles yesterday just to smell the leaves here in the fall, as corny as it sounds I have spent the last 20 years not knowing how great my perfume smells lol! or How I hate the taste of the cinnamon dolce latte after drinking it for 3 yrs, now I hate it lol… I feel alive and proud that I have made it this far cold turkey.. I knew that I could either die from smothering myself to death with the cigs or die from a heart attack from the cigs or fighting lung cancer, at least now I know that when I do eventually die it won’t be because I didn’t take good care of myself from here on out! Good luck everyone and yes, I still have cravings after all its only day 4 but it’s been the best 4 days of my last 20 years… Cravings pass, lung cancer doesnt….
4 Weeks
It feels so gooood!
I have made it to the 3 week mark! Not a single puff in 21 days.
Hardly any cravings now. Last week was horrible for panic attacks during moments of stress, it’s like my body didn’t know how to handle pressure without lighting up. Feeling good and strong for week 4!
WAHOOOOOOO !!!!! 30 DAYS and never looking back, Puffed on that shit for 30 yrs.One accupunture cost was 60.00 and I feel great. Anyone still having cravings, I highly recommend accupunture.I dont stink anymore, I cant stand the smell of it. I cant belive i TORTURED my body for so long.
Today is day 15 for me. Feeling great, its amazing….I can smell things now that I would have never noticed.
im passed the 3 week mark and dont even count days anymore. No cravings, besides when I drink beer but I manage. Go everyone, Im so happy Im not a smoker anymore, great feeling
Day 77 of cold turkey. 11 weeks and still have cravings. Wonder who is going to win , history or me. 40 years of smoking versus1800 plus hours of niq. free
Ive been reading anything and everything that has to do with staying ‘clean’ and it really has been helping me. Im on day 6. I didn’t think that was possible but here I am, even though it feels like I haven’t smoked in 6 weeks instead of days. Yesterday I was cleaning out my truck and found one lonely cigarette begging to be smoked, it felt pretty amazing to break it and throw it away. That in itself felt like a huge accomplishment and just made me realize I got this, I can do it. So cheers y’all! On to day 7!
Congradulations dawn, I’m on day 7 today. I’m hanging in there, but I’ve got those little gremlins telling me you’ve already smoked to long why quit now? You will never live long enough to have the same results because you waited to long. Now I really know it helps no matter how old, or how long you’ve smoked. Then my mind kicks in and tells me you never want to go through those first three days again. So still planning on being a non smoker!!
Day 11 and going strong, I think about smoking all day but only because that’s what I would be doing with my time, not because I have to have one and if I don’t im going to hurt the first person I see. Good job, Renie, are you still successful? I hope so, my mom and I were just saying that this morning.. that I wont pick up another one mainly because I cannot start over it would be way to hard.
Just checking in to see how everyone is doing! Happy Thanksgiving
I have been quit for 6 Months, 2 Weeks, 1 Day, 28 minutes and 27 seconds (199 days). I have saved $895.58 by not smoking 4,975 cigarettes. I have saved 2 Weeks, 3 Days, 6 hours and 35 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 5/8/2011 9:00 PM
day 84 Hope everybody gets through the holiday meal without the dreaded after dinner smoke. Good luck to all.
Made it through Thanksgiving! Several hard times yesterday. (stress? everybody sneaking outside for cigarettes?) I was hoping it being the 14th day it would be easier. I made it though. Hope everybody did! Today is day 15! Made it through my first holiday.
Yay! My first thanksgiving in ten years without a cigarette! AND i evenfind spent it with in-laws! Bring on Christmas!!
Congrats to Renie ,Dawn, and any and everybody else who made it through Thanksgiving smoke free. My next big day is tomorrow the dreaded 60 th birthday.
Hope you happy smoke free birthday, bob. With many, many more to come:)
Day 5 for me, and I am craving one bad. I did get that e cig and it does help but I do miss it. I can not smoke, I have to stay strong. Any advise?
Reached Day 3, I know it’s pretty early but feel a tremendous amount of energy already
@ April,
Try going for a run or a bike ride, your cravings go away, you become emotionally strong and your lungs will feel absolutely amazing.
Try it & stay strong!
I have quit a couple of times before with aids ie: patches, gum, etc. This is the first time I have done it cold turkey, Allen Carr’s book and a lot of prayer. On day seven and Carr is right, start looking at the cigarette as a toxic so called “friend” that must be rid of. Love the suggestion of the jar with the butts and water. Helps a lot. When the urge hits, go open that jar and take a big whiff, chug a glass water and thank God for the breathe of air you take in. It is truly a gift that we take for granted. I do not want to go thru the first three days of withdrawal again! Eyes and skin already look brighter, doing lots of deep breathing exercise. Coughing up some scary looking stuff. Not sleeping well at all feel urges of panic…..coming on less and less though. Learn your triggers and TRY (LOL) to avoid. Really think I am going to make it this time!
Celebrating day 100. Four others at work stopped the same day. I’m the only one left. I’m also the only cold turkey. One tried ciqarest. one went electric and one went prescription. Maybe it’s just me but I recommend cold turkey it is hard but you are not subbing one addiction for another. Good luck to all out there. The urges are still there but they get less and shorter in duration daily. The timeline is still great reading and accurate
Ahhh one month as an ex smoker! I agree cold turkey may be hard but its well worth it:)
Well, it has been 21 days now and I feel better not smoking. Even though I did not quit cold turkey, I am downing the nicotine in the e cig this week. I am much happier and Jay, thanks for the advise, I started walking my dogs 2 times a day and it feels great.
I want to thank all of you for your comments. I quit 4 days ago and reading and reading all of your comments has certainly helped. I was at a party tonight and two people were smoking,it was a little tough but I toughed it out and feel extremely good about it.
Thanks,
Karl
day #4 for me coughing a lot but feel great about quitting
Over a week now and urges are getting a lot easier to handle. I am confident in saying I am a non smoker.
13 days smoke free after 7 years of smoking….definatly loving this site boost my confidence!!
Hey,
Day 5. Cold turkey since the 26th (last cig on Christmas day). It’s easier today for sure. Day 3 and 4 I found myself looking for reasons to start again, but resisted. Day 1 and 2 it was like having Flu. Still very tired all of the time, but might go for a long walk (long for my wheezing body) this evening.
Good luck everyone :p.
p.s. Saved £30 already!
Day 1 on new years day (guess my resolution!) so excited I’m on hour 6! I am not looking foward to this week!
So quitting smoking is my new year resolution. It all started when my girlfriend said that she would have sex with me if I quit for a month in hopes that I would quit completely. Just a couple nights ago, there was a stressfull incident that caused her to have a change of heart. She told me that we would still have sex even if I decided not to quit. It’s been almost 24 hours since my last cigarette and I still plan to quit smoking regardless. I will be healthier and will have a better sex drive. What more can you ask for
Day 5 still hard sometimes but many friends too help me and always around me it is very important to ask your friends to help you quitting, have beeb smoking for 8 years 1 pacquet average a day, can’t wait for a healthier life!
Day 2 for the girlfriend and I. Both smokers of around 8 years and i am surprised at how ‘ok’ it has been (so far) but can see it getting a lot worse. I have been using the e-cig and seems to be helping. I can see that i am gonna put on some serious weight though :-/.
Good luck to all
Phil
Some suggestions for those struggling with it.
Start exercising. Lift weights, walk on a treadmill, eat fruits and vegetables and drink only water. You must replace old habits for new ones from my experience. If you can do it for one month you can do it for the rest of your life. Biggest hurdle is something upsetting in your life in the future, like a death, loss of wife, loss of job, etc.
Day 3 now im starting to feel it… Getting restless and argueing within myself but on the bright side I do feel good that I am able to do this while my husband still smokes. Keeping strong…
60 hours smoke free! Never thought I could do it. My skin has already started looking healthier an I don’t cough in the morning. I put small lollipops in my car to help with cravings. I hope the anxious fluttering in my chest goes away soon, bu I’m not giving up! Best of luck to you all!
2 weeks and getting easier by the day. I love not smelling like cigarettes all the time. I am starting to smell the smoke on others, one of the many reasons I quit!
Day 2 of not smoking. I am surprised at how smooth this is going. Don’t get me wrong, I have cravings and get that nervous feeling. It just isn’t as bad as I had thought it would be. I wish everyone the best of luck including myself!!! WE CAN DO THIS!!
On day 4, quitting was my resolution for this year. I’ve tried quitting with gum, e-cigs, and smokeless tobacco and each has failed except for going cold turkey Jan 1. Cold turkey is the only way to go. Day one and two where the hardest hurdles but I tried to occupy my free time as much as possible to avoid listening to my mind try to convince me to smoke. On day 3 I had many arguments with myself about “just having one” but I have to keep reminding my self that I will be starting over and dealing with the stress and anxiety of day 1 and two all over again. Today on day 4 it is easier to resist urges and the arguments I have with myself. Coming to sites like this help remind me why I don’t need nicotine to manage my emotions, and that I’m not the only one. It can be difficult to face all your emotions head on when you’ve been running from, and numbing them through nicotine for so long, but I am confident I don’t need to use cigarettes like a baby with a pacifier anymore. Hope this helps, these comments helped me. Good luck.
I am at the end of day 3, cant believe I made it this far. Thank god I have a ton of models to build to keep my hands and brain busy. The cravings are strong, and I hate the feeling in my chest. I have not noticed improved smell or taste though, but I know it will get better with time. I’m also excited about not going outside in the middle of winter to puff with the rest of the smokers.
Hi everyone.
New to this site. Today is day 4 for me. I am taking Chantrix so the withdrawal symptoms are not bad. Mostly mental. Glad to hear other people argue with themselves. I qit once before several years ago and argued with myself so much I thought I was going crazy! Good luck!
Day 2 for me after 24 years smoking. i struggled the first day, cried the first few hours in the morning. Luckily i have really supportive coworkers. As the day went on i did much better. i replaced my smoke breaks with walks. so far on day 2 no crying yet.
Day 6! Killin it. still having some hardcore cravings but thats just the cross I have to bare. Even got shit faced drunk last night and didn’t slip up. Winning!!!!!
Hi all,
Just found this site today, Day 6 for me today, 22 years of smoking & decided to quit Cold Turkey, I found the first 3 days quite easy but had strong cravings on day 4 but rode through them, yesterday was fine & today I’ve had a couple of cravings but nothing like day 4.Started to cough up some pretty gruesome looking phlegm but that has now passed & now feel a lot healthier!! Will report back in a few days!!
Good Luck to all!!
