ive tried, stop smoking groups, one-2-one’s with nhs folk, tried the chewys, tried the lozange, tried the patches, the only i probably havent tried was the inhalor. Any advise on effective ways to quit and stay quit….

I’m on day 12 today and I have patches through the NHS to do it, This is my 3rd attemp with the NHS helping me and both times i started smoking again before was due to drinking in a pub and my willpower leaving me with each drink I had. I am hoping this time the smoking laws will be in pubs by the time i ‘go it alone’ with no patch.

I have tried patches, lozenge’s (Yeuk) chewing gum (Not too good) and the inhalator (I thought was a good idea for my pub time – turned out it wasnt)
1st time i gave up was for about 6 months
2nd time was 19 months

This time I’m NOT going back to it!

My stop smoking consultant told me last week that he doesn’t recommend the inhalator as it is not quitting the hand to mouth habit AND the getting a ‘Hit’ of nicotine as you inhale through it, one puff on one of those is almost as strong as 10 puffs on a normal cigarette! So it is a ‘hit’

I have not done a group session, i prefer the one to one, but you really have to want to do it, and to stop people smoking in your house has helped me BIG TIME already this time, i was always lenient before, my other half is now cutting down as he has to smoke in the garden…. Its a massive help to me though.

    I smoked for about 22 years and I gave up smoking 7 years ago, with the Alan Carr book ‘The easy way to give up smoking’ whereby you had to have a cigarette with every new chapter.
    By the end I was giving my cigarettes away coz I just didn’t want them.

    A BAD COLD OR THROAT INFECTION – NEXT TIME YOU GET ONE AND IT IS HARD TO SMOKE ( YOU KNOW YOU HAVE DONE IT) DONT PUT YOURSELF THROUGH IT AND STOP THEN.

    Firstly you have to really want to quit, it is not something you can do half heartedly and since it seems like you have attempted this before you already know this.
    Set a quit-date and stick to it.
    Tell your friends, family and work colleagues or at least the ones who will support you.
    Read up on quitting and what to expect, visit various websites for more information.
    On the day before your quit, throw out EVERYTHING in your home that you associate with smoking, cigs, ashtray, lighters, matches. Don’t store them.. just bin them and the same goes for your desk drawer at work.
    I’d also suggest a bath, shower, clean clothes all for your first day. Completely smoke free

    Also the website clicktoquit.com is very helpful and the forums there offer a lot of support and there will be people there that you can quit with.
    The best advice I could give you is keep at it. When you feel the cravings, just take out some gum or simply take a shower. Don’t live it day by day but minute by minute. The first 36 hours or so are always tough but you can do it.

I quit in July last year and I have to tell you that you need sheer willpower and have to want to do it for yourself, the more you convince yourself your going to fail you will do, you have to be very, very positive, remember that a craving only lasts a few seconds and when you feel it coming on get up and walk about and do something to take your mind off it, reward yourself too as that helps, do a bit of meditation as that really helps with the feelings of stress and panic, I’ve just had a holiday of a lifetime in Australia because of the money I saved from quitting the cigs helped towards our savings big time, think of all the places and things you can go to or do with the money you save too, just be very positive and remember your the only person that matters in this and the very best of luck to you.

    I quit smoking years ago, I just decided
    I was going to quit and never smoked another one.
    I wanted to for a while but I didn’t give in to my cravings,
    soon they went away. You can do it, I know you can.

    its been 36 days now at first i was on the nicotine gum but i have been8 days without them now i still fancy a fag after a meal or a drink but its nowhere near as bad and doesn’t last as long all i can say is if i can give up after 26 years anyone can just keep at it best of luck

    Its all about motivation. Find the motivation that works for you. Write a list of 10 reasons why you want to quit. Not why you should quit or why other people say you should, but personal reasons and read it every time you want a cigarette

    it;s a nightmare isn’t it?! I tried loads of things… Hypnotism worked pretty well – I think it was a combination of the fact that I committed to paying someone money to help me stop and the actual hypnotism but it was the first time in 10 years when I got through a day without a cigarette and it was an amazing feeling the realise I could actually do that. Sadly I tested the hypnotism too much by having a fag a month later but I finally did give up from a change in attitude – I was so sick of myself for not wanting to be a smoker anymore that the next time I got hammered and smoked too much in a night feeling dog rough the next day, I didn’t have that gross hung over ciggy first thing, then I didn’t have the lunchtime one, then I didn’t have one when I got in from work etc then I went to bed, then the next morning again, I didn’t have that ciggy etc etc. It’s just taking it one step at a time and appreciating how long it’s been since you smoked is a good motivator for why you don’t want to break the success.   17. You have to really WANT to give up!
    I used to try because others kept telling me to and my sister even showed me pictures of diseased lungs but it didn’t stop me! Like you I tried various methods but I didn’t really try hard enough!
    Even though I’m a care-worker I don’t see much point now at nearly 60 I don’t smoke a great deal and expect I’ll smoke even less when the ban comes in but if I was younger I’d use Money as an incentive!
    Most of my friends have and it worked for them. You have to be strong though and put the money you’d spend every day in a jar or tin. If you don’t you won’t notice the benefits. After so long you will have money to buy something special so set a target!

    try the allen carr programme is a bit pricey but they say its very effective.
    alterative have you though of hypnosis they do specific non smoking sessions. Most people just do one session that lasts 90min.
